說放「A」進去,指的是甚麼?

教育局近期的政策新猶是推動STEM教育,並於2015/16和2016/17學年分別向小學和中學發放一筆過津貼,支援有關教學。政策目標在於鼓勵學校訓練學生科學、科技和數學科的創意和邏輯思維,以及解決日常生活問題,最終為加強香港的國際競爭力。(註1) 教育局並沒就此設定固定的教學課程範圍,不過,有報導指大部分小學都根據教育局的課程指引,把相關元素滲入常識和電腦科。(註2) 而一些報章的報導、專欄和讀者來稿反映學校和教師對推行STEM教育的取態和反應不一,甚或趨向兩極。(註3) 背後原因可待深究。而STEM教育的倡議在英美地區引發不同領域的人士包括藝術和戲劇教育工作者、一些商界以及從事科技媒體的人士的反響,認為需要把「A」放進STEM使之成為STEAM教育。這裏所說的「A」,究竟指的是甚麼?本文嘗試梳理一些說法和文獻資料,希望藉此跟香港從事教育、表演藝術和戲劇教育的朋友一同思考和討論。 倡議STEAM教育的主要來自英美澳紐一些學府和學校教師,當中有視「A」為不同形式的藝術如戲劇、舞蹈、音樂、視覺藝術、電影電視等(arts),亦有包括藝術與設計工藝(arts and design),或藝術與人文範疇(arts and humanities)如社會科、通識科、文學科等。倡議的設想是不同形式和組合的藝術學習應該與科技、科學、工程和數學學習同樣重要;意思是科目不應有輕重和高低之別。(註4) 訴求無疑反映了這些地區的中小學校和專上藝術、設計工藝或人文科不受重視,或被視為次等所謂較容易「求其」過關的科目(soft subjects);英國教育當局曾提醒學生修讀該些科目可能影響升學和就業機會。(註5) 上述地區的學校和大專教師正在努力試驗和推動藝術在中小學的科學學習。教研人員指出STEAM中「A」不單是用來『包裝』或『為科學技術作嫁』,從藝術創作和設計的角度來結合科技、科學與藝術有助提升學生科學學習的解難能力,讓他們做深思熟慮的決定。(註6) 結合科學與藝術學習亦能互補兩個學科視野的限制,有助打破「藝術是直覺,數學和科學是合乎邏輯」之類的數理/藝術對立的刻板看法,啟發學生體會無論藝術還是數學都可以兼具創意和精確邏輯。教研人員認為藝術和人文學科訓練能為對準科學家、技術專家和工程師提供必要的價值觀,道德和責任的討論,而不單是籠統的「開闊心胸、拓寬思路」而已。(註7) 對專上創意和表演藝術教育的教研人員而言,STEAM中「A」除了是戲劇、舞蹈、音樂等不同形式的藝術專業(arts),藝術創作更是生產知識的模式(arts practice as a mode of knowledge production),戲劇/藝術創作實踐本身就是研究(arts practice as research),意思是藝術創作實踐可導向研究,研究亦導向實踐(practice-led research and research-led practice),從而衍生知識和建立理論。(註8) Barbara Bolt...
